GPA information

Nixa High School's grade point average is based on a 4.0 scale. GPA is not weighted at NHS.

Understanding Our Non-Weighting Policy

At Nixa High School, we take pride in providing a comprehensive and equitable educational experience for all our students. As part of our commitment to fairness and inclusivity, our school operates as a non-weighting institution.

What Does Non-Weighting Mean?

In a non-weighting school, all courses, regardless of their level of difficulty (such as Honors, Advanced Placement, or dual enrollment), are given equal weight in the calculation of students' Grade Point Averages (GPA). This means that an "A" earned in a standard-level course contributes the same to a student’s GPA as an "A" in an advanced course.

Why Non-Weighting?

Our decision to adopt a non-weighting policy is rooted in our belief that all learning experiences are valuable and deserve equal recognition. This approach encourages students to pursue their academic interests and passions without the pressure of GPA calculations influencing their course selections. It fosters a learning environment where students are motivated by curiosity and personal growth rather than by the pursuit of a weighted GPA.

College Admissions and Academic Rigor

It’s important to note that most college admissions offices take weighted grades and convert them to a standard 4.0 system to compare students from high schools across the country. Students who challenge themselves with rigorous coursework often perform better on standardized tests like the ACT and SAT. While some colleges have adopted test-optional policies for admissions, many still offer scholarships based on a combination of GPA and standardized test scores. Therefore, taking advanced courses not only prepares students for college-level work but also enhances their competitiveness for scholarships and admissions.

How Does This Benefit Students?

Encourages Academic Exploration: Students are more likely to enroll in courses that genuinely interest them, without worrying about the impact on their GPA.

Promotes Equity: All students, regardless of the courses they take, are evaluated on the same scale, ensuring fairness in academic recognition.

Reduces Stress: The non-weighting policy can help alleviate the stress associated with maintaining a high GPA, allowing students to focus on learning and development.

Our Commitment to Excellence

Even as a non-weighting school, we remain committed to offering rigorous academic programs that challenge and engage our students. Our advanced courses, including Honors and AP classes, are designed to provide students with a deeper understanding of the subject matter and prepare them for college-level work.

At Nixa High School, we believe that education is about more than just grades—it's about fostering a love of learning and helping each student reach their full potential.
